BHS and AVEC Ham House

Breathitt Co. Area Technology Center, Mr. Gene Booth (Carpentry), and Mr. Kelly Clibern (Electricity), are always a class act and team leaders.  They have been working with Mrs. Stewarts Agriculture Project in repairing a building to accommodate Breathitt High Schools very first “Ham House”.

These two gentlemen are always looking for avenues to allow their students some hands on learning experience, all the while contributing to an educational opportunity.  They were instrumental in problem solving to determine what repairs needed to be made in order to repair the house so it could hold and cure the country hams from the Agriculture Department.  Many of their students used their skills taught in the classroom to practice an actual real world problem.

Area Tech Carpentry student, Taylor Fugate, worked at preparing the door for stability, and problem solved throughout the activity.  James Collins, installed a light switch and checked on other electrical problems.

On behalf of the Agriculture Department at Breathitt High School, we would like to say a special thank you and appreciation for the work, organization, time and patients in making the first Ham House for Breathitt Co. High School.

October 18th the Technology Student Association (TSA) went to the Win with Wood competition at the Robinson Forest Wood Utilization Center located at Quicksand, Kentucky. When the students arrived they were transported via hay ride over to the center where they competed in a variety of Forestry/Agriculture events.
Microbiology Students Study Swabs

Students in Mrs. McCune’s Microbiology class  made bacterial swab plates by swabbing various locations around the high school.  After the plates were incubated some pretty nasty colonies of bacteria began to appear.   Students used one colony of bacteria from their original petri dish to streak another agar plate.  From the streak plates, students have learned how to make their own bacterial smears to investigate under the microscopes.  They’ve also tried their hand at gram staining the bacteria smears to aid in the identification of their bacterial type.

Chicks at BHS

Have they hatched yet?  This was a popular question for Mrs. McCune because the students knew that after 21 days of adding water to the incubator, watching and observing, it was time for some action.  The chick incubation program is designed to allow students to incubate eggs in their own classrooms.  Ms. Jessica Mullins, Breathitt County 4-H Agent provided the fertilized eggs and incubator on August 21st and now 18 chicks will be given to good homes of students and teachers at BHS.

Student Rabbit Project
Taking the Challenge, Superintendent Melanie Stevens visited one of Breathitt High Schools Agriculture Program members, Kayla Swan, August 5th, and presented her with 4 rabbits, two does and two bucks, to help assist her in her SAEP project in FFA.
Kayla is a junior at Breathitt High and a FFA Officer for her Chapter.  Kayla was very excited to receive the rabbits from Superintendent Stevens.  Kayla helped prepare cages with grandfather, Darrell Robinson and Agriculture Teacher, Sherrie Stewart.  Kayla will learn many valuable lessons through this project, such as responsibility, record keeping, time management, and animal care.
By her records Kayla will give speeches on care of small animals, and she will also enter proficiency areas which helps her earn her FFA State Degree.  She will be able to breed and sell her rabbits as they produce, and this project will increase her earning potential as she learns.
Breathitt Co. FFA and Agriculture Program wish to thank Superintendent Stevens for taking such an active roll in challenging our students to excel and giving them the opportunity to do so.  Superintendent Stevens recently challenged the FFA group to a landscaping project, and this is a second challenge to help our students succeed.
Kayla is the daughter of Peggy Swan, and granddaughter of Darrell and Brenda Robinson of  Vancleve, Ky.
Students Participate in Farmers Market
August 3rd Breathitt High School FFA members, Kayla Swan, Robbie Turner, and Braxton Taulbee (not pictured) set up a display at the local Farmers market, located at Quicksand, Ky.  FFA members set up several vegetables, which they also sold, and other items such as wood ID, smell test of foods, and seed ID.
The members worked all day and really enjoyed visiting with members of the community and promoting Agriculture.  The Farmers Market will be an extension of allowing all of our community to participate in locally grown and harvested fruits and vegetables.  Buying locally ensure high quality and fresh foods. Agriculture students are all encouraged and expected to have a productive project.  Kayla, Robbie, and Braxton started their seeds in the school greenhouse, planted their plants into their gardens, maintained them over the summer months, and they are harvesting their produce which allows them to use their vegetables at home or sell them at the Farmers Market.  They enjoyed the Farmers Market, and they are making plans for next year.
If you would like to learn more about the Farmers Markets in Ky. contact local extension services, agriculture programs, or visit
www.kyagr.com to find more information on how you can get involved.

Students Enjoy Lab Activities

Mrs. Spencer’s Advanced Placement Chemistry class has been investigating the processes used to determine the formulas of chemical compounds.  In this lab, they were determining the formula of a hydrate.  A hydrate is a compound that has incorporated a number of water molecules into its structure.  When heated, the water molecules will evaporate leaving behind a salt.  The students were determining the number of water molecules incorporated into an everyday hydrate, Epsom salt.  Once they determine the number of water molecules in a particular substance, they will be able to determine the actual formula of the Epsom salt.

Students always enjoy lab activities and Mrs. Spencer accommodates them regularly!
