Dear Parents or guardians,
I would like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to teach your child. It is truly an honor to be in a position of influence on young people's lives. What we do each and every day in the Breathitt County School System has a lasting impact on the lives of our youth.
Although our main emphasis will be to get students reading on grade level, when possible we will learn various literary and writing elements. We will read excerpts in our regular education reading texts as well as various topics in science, social studies, health and safety, arts, and math during the week. Students will then answer multiple choice questions and open response questions about these readings in order to become more proficient writers. This will also help to prepare for the MAP assessments and the end of the year assessments. Students will have a select vocabulary to learn from each of the stories that are read. The internet will be used as a resource as a supplement to learning about topics being read. Grades 3-6 have technology devices that can be used to enhance learning. We will be using IXL math, Kahn Academy and other programs to supplement learning.
We will be using Lexia reading as the main tool to bridge gaps in reading abilities. This is a computer program designed to help readers become more proficient. I feel this is an excellent reading program. Each student should increase their reading level by 2-3 grade levels or more during the school year. I have had students increase their grade level reading by more than 3 grade levels in past years.
I will be teaching or collaborating with the regular education math teachers in two math classes; one for each grade in grades third through fifth. If you would like to know your child's current topic or current assignment, please refer to your child's regular education teacher's lesson plans. This year I will teach or collaborate with Jason Hall and Sally Morris. I will also be working with Jesse and Amy Bailey, Stefaine Back, Paige Beasley and Doug Halsey to address our student's needs. If you have any concerns or questions, please contact me at the number or e-mail address below. My planning is from 12:10-1:00.
