Family Resource and Youth Service Centers Celebrate Mar 2, 2020 FRC

Can you believe it has been 30 years since the first FRYSC opened its doors in the state of Kentucky? FRYSC’s employ 1,400 people statewide (full & part-time). Now there are 442-Family Resource Centers and 296 Youth Service Centers with 116 combined FRYSC Serving preschool-12th grade. On February 27, 2020,  our FRYSC Coalition hosted a Legislative Reception as our state budget is being developed. There were regional displays celebrating FRYSC with colorful displays. Region 8, includes Breathitt County,  had a beautifully crafted tree with components and services listed on each leaf. The roots of the tree were the families of our children which is, of course, is the most important resource we have.  Thank you,  Sharon Collins, for taking this huge task to design the masterpiece. The highlight of our evening was visiting with our Governor, Andy Beshear,  along with the State Cabinet Leaders, State Representatives, Senators, and other Legislators. Governor Beshear applauded the efforts the many coordinators put forth every day to serve our families, as he stated FRYSC was a great Kentucky team. Way to go, FRYSC, 30 years strong!

SES STLP Feb 24, 2020 SES STLP

Sebastian Elementary Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP) traveled to Floyd County on January 27th to compete in the Regional STLP competition. SES STLP developed a community project, Bobcat Celebration. The students decided to pair up with the Nim Henson Geriatric Center.  "Bobcat Celebration" is the project in which the students created Christmas ornaments in December with the residents. They also read stories and sang Christmas carols. The students are delivering Valentine cards to the residents in February. In March, the students are creating carnival games for the residents to enjoy. The STLP students will travel to Rupp Arena for the State competition on April 9, 2020. STLP members are Connor Fultz, Brielle Halsey, Isabelle Spencer, James Coomer, Wyatt Spencer, Kaylie Chapman, Lily Barnett, Audrynn Hamilton, and Aaron David Johnson. Elizabeth Minix is the coach.  The team was recognized at the February Breathitt County Board meeting.

Staying Healthy Feb 17, 2020 Staying Healthy

Staying healthy begins with me, Ms. Genevieve, always uses this line to introduce tips on staying clean and healthy. On this day, she went to preschool to explain how to properly brush and floss their teeth. She always carries a large scale model of giant teeth and a giant brush to let the youngster’s practice. They sing round and round up and down song so that the little ones will know how to complete the movements. The cavity model shows the students how a healthy tooth can turn into decay and rot away. This is one of the most important parts of the program. School smiles provides extra toothbrush kits so all the children receive extra brush/floss and paste to take home. If your child needs new toothbrush or floss come to the FRC room and get one, especially after illness. Staying clean and healthy begins with them learning to care for themselves!
