The Lincoln’s visit LBJ

LBJ Elementary School was fortunate enough to have Larry and Mary Elliott visit our excited students for an adventure into the life of our 16th President –Abraham Lincoln. This Shelbyville, Ky minister has probably recited “The Gettysburg Address” 10,000 times and displays passion as he discusses with the children what drove President Lincoln to never give up or accept no for an answer. He explains in full dress character the trials of the Lincoln presidency and personal tragedies that shaped Abraham Lincoln into the great leader he was for our country. Mr. Elliott’s wife Mary also visited portraying Mary Todd Lincoln for our little cowboys. Mary described how the Lincoln’s met and shared the personal tragedies that impacted the Lincoln’s life. Mary Todd Lincoln was a remarkable individual that had suffered the heartbreak of burying 3 children and the assignation of her husband. They reenacted the Lincoln’s first meeting with a sweet waltz and then describe the horror of witnessing a slave auction all within a 45 minute time frame. In explaining the war between the states he chose students from the audience to show the fight of brother against brother. The Elliott’s were magnificent actors that illustrated perfectly how 1 man raised in the depths of poverty with no formal education had such a positive impact on the shape of our country. It was a very informative program complete with a question and answer sheet for all the students. Giving all students a personal view into the life of one of Kentucky’s own native sons!
